New England Center for Arts & Technology

NECAT’s 14-week training program equally focuses on culinary skills, life skills, and career readiness, equipping students with both culinary expertise and the confidence and knowledge needed for employment. Our aim is to empower graduates to envision and pursue a new future for themselves. Through our extensive network of social service partners, we also offer support in navigating application processes and securing documentation for subsidized housing and other government benefits.

NECAT delivers its culinary job training curriculum at three locations: the Boston Training Center, the Suffolk County House of Correction, and the East Boston YMCA.

Bunker Hill Community College Training & Apprenticeship Programs


Earn a Degree in Early Childhood Development

The Early Childhood Development program offers a two-year associate degree while working in the field. Participants will receive at least 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training each year and complete their college coursework at no cost. Upon completing the program, apprentices may qualify for full-time positions with increased pay.

Graduates with an A.S. in Early Childhood Development are eligible to become Lead Teacher Certified according to Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) standards.
Employment decisions are determined by participating employers.

Program Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years old
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must be willing to work in the City of Boston
  • Must be authorized to work in the US
  • Previous experience is preferred but not required

The Massachusetts Association of Community Colleges (MACC), in collaboration with the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership (MACP), is excited to continue the “Be Mass Competitive” Program. This workforce development initiative aims to generate employment opportunities with some of the Commonwealth’s largest businesses, addressing labor needs in Massachusetts and enhancing access to career advancement.

Participants in this program will receive specialized training and career-placement services, leading to promising employment opportunities with major employers in the state. The program is designed to support and elevate the success of individuals of color by offering pathways to careers with MACP companies committed to diversifying their workforce. This opportunity is available at no cost to participants, who will also receive stipends. Individuals with a high school diploma or equivalent, or higher, are encouraged to apply.

This collaborative effort between MACC and MACP employers include:

  • Up to ten weeks of Customer Service or General Professional Administrative training provided by MACC at Bunker Hill Community College, free of charge
  • Paid on-the-job training with employers such as Bank of America, Boston Scientific, John Hancock, Mass General Brigham, and others.
  • Full-time job offers contingent on successful completion of training modules and performance during on-the-job training
  • Ongoing professional job coaching throughout the training period and into employment

Bunker Hill Community College, Mass General Brigham, and Project Hope Boston have teamed up to offer FOUR programs, currently available at no cost to Boston residents. Funded by the City of Boston’s Worker Empowerment – Life Sciences Workforce Development Initiative grant, these programs will kick off in the spring and fall of 2024, paving the way for you to enter the field of Medical Laboratory Science!

Phlebotomy Certificate
This program equips you with the skills needed to collect blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis. It covers essential topics such as processes and procedures, safety protocols, quality assurance, venipuncture techniques, terminology, and relevant anatomy physiology.
The course is delivered in a hybrid format, combining remote learning through pre-recorded and live webinars with in-person lab sessions. The online component spans approximately 90 hours, with most students completing the certification within 8-16 weeks. Clinical assignments and lab work will take place at a later date at the Charlestown campus.

Medical Laboratory Assistant Certificate
The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) Certificate program trains individuals to support laboratory operations by assisting with patient sample processing and test preparation. MLAs are crucial in ensuring that laboratory functions run smoothly, supporting medical technologists in their tasks. Responsibilities include performing phlebotomy, processing specimens, preparing tests for technologists, maintaining and calibrating equipment, and managing the Laboratory Information System (LIS).

Medical Laboratory Technician Associate in Science (Bunker Hill Community College)

This program equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to become Clinical/Medical Laboratory Technicians through a combination of lectures, hands-on laboratory activities, and clinical experience in hospital settings. Students will learn to perform diagnostic tests that support disease diagnosis, treatment, and health maintenance. The hybrid program spans two years, equivalent to four semesters, and is conducted at the Charlestown Campus. It is offered once a year, starting each fall semester. Medical Laboratory Science (Mass General Brigham)

The Mass General Brigham Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Training Program is designed to prepare students for a career in the evolving field of laboratory medicine. This program offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes hands-on instruction, onsite clinical training, and online learning. Students will gain practical experience under the guidance of expert laboratory professionals from Mass General Brigham Clinical Laboratories. This full-time Post-Baccalaureate Certificate program runs Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 4 PM, over a 10-month period. The program is conducted onsite at Mass General Brigham, with start dates in January and July. The R3 Program at BHCC offers a valuable opportunity for individuals affected by the COVID-19 economic downturn to return to the workforce with potential financial support. Eligible participants may receive full scholarships for tuition and materials. This program provides short-term training to help students quickly acquire skills, earn industry-recognized credentials, and become job-ready. To qualify for funding, students must meet attendance and other program requirements.

The R3 Program delivers specialized training, career planning, and placement services aimed at improving job prospects in IT and Healthcare. It is designed to enhance student outcomes and support career advancement.

Individuals with a high school diploma or equivalency, or higher, are encouraged to apply.

Priority considerations is given to unemployed individuals, those with significant financial need, and those without other financial assistance.

Unemployed? Access FREE Career Training

If you’re unemployed, underemployed, working fewer than 20 hours a week, or meet federal poverty guidelines, you may be eligible for free training. This opportunity is also available for those new to the workforce, including recent high school graduates, individuals who have never worked before, and new immigrants authorized to work in the U.S.

She will review your eligibility and schedule an admissions appointment to complete the enrollment process. Note: EMT and CNA programs do not require an admissions appointment but do need assisted course enrollment.

Earn a Tuition-Free Associate Degree While Working at Triumvirate Environmental

Through BHCC’s partnership with Triumvirate Environmental, you can earn an associate degree at no cost while gaining valuable work experience. Triumvirate Environmental Inc. offers sustainable solutions to top companies in Life Sciences, Healthcare, Education, and Industrial sectors. Their experts help organizations minimize waste, cut costs, ensure safety and compliance, manage risks, and uphold their reputation.

If selected, you will:

  • Start a full-time position at Triumvirate Environmental, working 30-40 hours per week with full benefits and a competitive starting rate of $22 per hour (based on prior experience)
  • Receive on-the-job training and opportunities for career advancement within the company
  • Enjoy free college tuition for earning your associate degree (a $13,700 values) while employed. You can choose any program of study, though we recommend the AS in Environmental Science or a Business Degree if you plan to advance at Triumvirate.
  • Commit to staying with Triumvirate for at least four years or until you complete your degree
  • Progress through your degree at your own pace, starting with one course per semester if you prefer

Training Opportunities Program (TOP)

The Training Opportunities Program (TOP) enables you to continue receiving unemployment benefits while participating in full-time, approved training to acquire new job skills. If you need to develop new skills to secure reemployment, you may qualify for TOP. To enroll, submit a completed application to the Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA). If approved, TOP allows DUA to waive the requirement for active job search, letting you receive unemployment benefits while undergoing DUA-approved training. Additionally, TOP can extend your benefits for up to 26 weeks if your training exceeds the length of your initial unemployment claim. Please note that DUA does not cover training costs.

To apply for an extension of unemployment benefits, students must be enrolled in a Certificate or Associate degree program. Obtain an application by contacting the TOP Unit at 617-626-5375 (formerly known as Section 30).

Eligibility Requirements: Enrollment in at least 12 credits per semester or 20 clock hours of non-credit training, High school diploma or GED required

International Institute of New England

IINE’s Ready, Set, Service! Training Program equips students with the skills needed for customer service roles in dynamic and growing industries like hotels, restaurants, and healthcare. This seven-week program covers essential topics including financial literacy, job readiness, resume and cover letter writing, and interview techniques. Participants will also attend networking workshops and receive ongoing support for job search and placement. The training will be tailored to align with students’ career interests.

Course Details:

  • Duration: 7 weeks, with 5 weeks of online instruction and 2 weeks of in-person classes
  • Schedule: 3 hours per day (9:00 AM to 12:00 PM), 5 days a week (Monday-Friday)
  • Location: In-person sessions are held at IINE’s Boston office, 2 Boylston Street
  • Certifications: Includes OSHA and CPR certifications, as well as financial literacy training
  • Post-Training Support: Weekly 1-hour sessions with IINE staff for job search and preparation assistance 

Eligibility: 

  • Residents of Metro North, Boston, and Greater Boston who are unemployed or underemployed 
  • Must be 18 years old
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • A driver’s license is preferred but not required

The Northeast Advanced Manufacturing Consortium


Program Description

The NAMC Electromechanical Assembly training programs span 200 to 300 hours and are designed to prepare students for IPC-A-610/J-STD-001 certification as assemblers, solderers, and inspectors in the electronics industry.

Training Includes:

  • Technical Skills: Instruction in using assembly hand tools, reading blueprints, measuring, torquing, micrometers, oscilloscopes, wire harnesses, and various termination types such as crimping, pins, lugs, extractors, and connectors
  • Electrical Theory: Basics of current conductance, electron flow, circuit continuity, temperature measurements, decibels, and electrostatics
  • Hands-On Experience: Practical use of mechanism assembly tools and processes aligned with industry standards
  • Safety Training: OSHA 10-hour General Safety certification and workplace safety protocols
  • Certification Preparation: Training to achieve IPC-A-610 and IPC-J-STD-001 certification

Graduates will gain foundational knowledge in electronics, understand the electronics manufacturing process, and be ready for entry-level Electromechanical Assembly Technician roles across various companies.


Program Description

The NAMC CNC Machine Operator training program offers a comprehensive pre-employment introduction to precision machining. This program spans 250-300 hours and includes:

  • Hands-On Technical Training: Practical experience in operating CNC machines
  • Shop Math: Essential mathematical skills for machining tasks
  • Metrology and Inspection: Techniques for measuring and inspecting machined parts
  • Blueprint Reading: Understanding technical drawings and specifications
  • OSHA 10 General Safety: Basic safety training for the workplace

Graduates will be well-equipped for entry-level positions such as CNC Machine Operator, Quality Control Inspector, and Manual Machinist, as well as roles in engineering and purchasing support. The program aims to provide meaningful and sustainable careers in Advanced Manufacturing, with opportunities for career advancement. North Shore programs offer additional shop time and include NIMS CNC Milling Certification.

NAMC’s welding training programs, typically lasting 300 hours, provide extensive instruction in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), commonly known as tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, as well as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), or MIG welding, and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). These programs address the growing demand for skilled TIG and MIG welders, as highlighted by employers and industry partners in Massachusetts’ manufacturing sector.

Graduates of NAMC’s welding programs will be well-prepared for entry-level positions across various welding disciplines. The training focuses on achieving proficiency in welding standards set by the American Welding Society (AWS). Upon completion, students will be equipped with the skills and confidence needed to secure AWS industry-recognized certification, enhancing their professional credentials and ensuring their readiness for the workforce.

YMCA of Greater Boston

Sign up for the YMCA of Greater Boston’s free English classes tailored for adults aiming to advance their education or professional careers. This course is ideal for advanced language learners who want to refine their workplace and academic language skills while gaining insights into American workplace culture.

YMCA Training, Inc. offers job skills training and employment support in close partnership with the Greater Boston healthcare sector. This program delivers intensive training in computerized office skills, designed to mirror the expectations of a professional office environment. Training, Inc. provides hands-on, cutting-edge technical training and fosters strong, ongoing relationships with major employers in Greater Boston.

This 16-week Medical Administrative Assistant program equips participants with skills for general registration and front desk administrative roles. The training covers basic medical terminology, billing and claims processing, HIPAA and OSHA guidelines, and an overview of health insurance. Upon completion, participants will take a certification exam to earn their industry-recognized Medical Administrative Assistant credential.

The Education & Training Branch collaborates with New England Culinary Arts Training (NECAT) and the East Boston YMCA Branch to offer a bilingual job training program in culinary arts. This 12-week integrated program delivers English instruction and culinary training in both Spanish and English. It merges language education and literacy development with workforce preparation, training, employment support, and industry-recognized credentialing.

The YMCA of Greater Boston is excited to introduce a new Early Childhood Apprenticeship Program designed to help you build a career in the fulfilling field of early childhood education.

This program offers the chance to earn early childhood education teacher credentials while getting paid. Apprentices will receive compensation for 150 hours of training, engage in at least 2,000 hours of hands-on experience, and work closely with a mentor teacher.

Upon completion, graduates will receive priority consideration for teaching positions at the YMCA of Greater Boston and other affiliated organizations.

YMCA Training Inc. is offering a free in-person program designed to equip participants with the skills needed for success in the property management field.

This 10-week course prepares individuals for administrative roles in property management. Participants will gain knowledge in property management terminology, best practices for resident customer service, rent calculations, and housing recertification processes. The program includes on-site learning and job shadowing opportunities at local property management offices. Trainees will be prepared to complete the 3-day Certified Professional of Occupancy (CPO) Training and Certification exam, administered by the New England Affordable Housing Management Association. Upon completion, trainees will be connected with property management employers for additional job shadowing and potential full-time job opportunities.

Catholic Charities Boston


El Centro
offers intensive, free adult ESOL classes for all language proficiency levels. Students benefit from innovative course offerings, including El Centro’s pioneering Critical Thinking and Analytical Reading classes specifically designed for ESOL learners. The program includes math and financial literacy instruction, a rigorous curriculum with contextualized content in natural and social sciences, and digital literacy integrated at every ESOL level. Additionally, students receive highly personalized advising, career pathway development, and individualized support for transitioning to college or post-secondary career training. They also have access to a broad range of support services provided by Catholic Charities.

ESOL and College Transition Program: Since July 2016, El Centro has placed over 200 students in college and serious vocational training programs. The program strives to bring students from the lowest levels of English language learning to college and workforce readiness. Most El Centro students graduating from the highest level start the program at low levels and move up.

El Centro IT Program: El Centro IT offers training in the dynamic field of information technology with a focus on cybersecurity, delivered by the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology. The program spans two semesters from September to June and includes 10 hours per week of hybrid classroom instruction (both in-person and via Zoom), along with 15-20 hours per week of independent study and exam preparation. Successful participants earn 15 college credits and receive internationally recognized industry certifications, including CompTIA Security+ and PenTest. All training, materials, and certification exams are provided at no cost to participants. The program also includes soft skills and career readiness training, as well as job search and placement services for internships, apprenticeships, or direct employment based on student skills and certification achievements.
Applicants must have advanced English skills and US employment authorization.


ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

Learning English can be challenging for non-native speakers. These classes support adult immigrants in mastering the language, improving their comprehension of both spoken and written English, and maintaining the motivation needed to advance their skills.


High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) Programs

Out-of-school youth can join our GED preparation and skills training programs, which include Youthworks, Teenstart, and the Education and Parenting Skills Center.

GED and HiSET Adult Basic Education (ABE)
Open to individuals 18 and older with at least an intermediate level of English proficiency, ABE classes assist adults in enhancing their skills in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. These classes support students in achieving personal and career objectives or preparing for High School Equivalency exams such as the GED or HiSET.

Courses in reading, writing, and math are available across various levels, including beginning literacy and basic numeracy. All Catholic Charities ABE classes are currently scheduled between 9 AM and 3:30 PM.

Embark on your career journey in healthcare with roles as Nursing Assistants and Home Health Aides (NA/HHAs), two of the fastest-growing occupations in the field. There are numerous job opportunities available at nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals, and private care agencies.

The healthcare sector offers flexible scheduling options to accommodate your needs and those of your family, including part-time positions and various shifts such as days, evenings, nights, or weekends.

Starting as a Nursing Assistant or Home Health Aide can pave the way to higher-paying roles in healthcare, such as Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN).

Nursing Assistants provide support with daily living activities and basic nursing care under the supervision of an RN or LPN. Home Health Aides offer personal health care services, including bathing, dressing, and grooming, to elderly, recovering, or disabled individuals in their homes.

City Academy
offers training programs that prepare individuals for careers as Emergency Medical Technician (EMTs) and for positions requiring a Commercial Driver’s License and/or Hoisting License within the City of Boston. These city positions offer wages above Boston’s living wage (currently $17.55 per hour) and come with health benefits, union membership, and opportunities for salary increases.

The Good Jobs Metro Boston Coalition is dedicated to training and placing residents into 4,618 quality jobs over a three-year period, focusing on childcare, healthcare, and clean energy sectors.

The Greater Boston Equitable Apprenticeship Pathways
initiative will connect Boston residents with pre-apprenticeship opportunities throughout a four-year grant period. This pilot program is funded by the $3 million Apprenticeship Building America (ABA) grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. The ABA grant supports pre-apprenticeship programs that lead to Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs) across four key industries:

Construction, Hospitality, Healthcare, and Life Sciences

The Office of Workforce Development oversees this grant, while the pre-apprenticeship programs are administered by partner organizations. Our partners include BEST Hospitality Training, Boston Emergency Medical Services, YouthBuild Boston, and MassBioEd – each a leader in their industry providing high-quality career training opportunities.

The pre-apprenticeships offer:

This six-week, 150-hour program prepares participants for hotel housekeeping roles with training in:

  • Ergonomics
  • Chemical safety and blood-borne pathogens
  • Cross-cultural communication

Graduates receive job search support from career coaches and are aimed for full-time, union housekeeping positions starting at $25/hour. Upon placement, they complete an apprenticeship and earn a Massachusetts Department of Labor Housekeeping credential. Additionally, those pursuing a hospitality management certificate or associate degree at Bunker Hill Community College can earn up to 12 college credits.

This program serves as a gateway to their Registered Apprenticeship Program, which trains participants for roles such as Biomanufacturing Technician, Clinical Trial Associate, and Laboratory Support Specialist. By expanding apprenticeships in Biomanufacturing and Clinical Trials, the program aims to create more opportunities for individuals who have traditionally been underrepresented in the industry. Employer partners include leading life sciences companies such as AbbVie, Agio Pharmaceuticals, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Apellis Pharmaceuticals, Arranta Bio, Blueprint Medicines, Bristol Myers Squibb, Corning Life Sciences, Covis Pharma, Ginkgo Bioworks, Halloran Consulting, Jounce Therapeutics, Magenta Therapeutics, MassBiologics, Pfizer, Replimune, Rentschler, Surface Oncology, Takeda, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Vertex Pharmaceuticals
This pre-apprenticeship training is provided through the Boston EMS EMT program, a full-time, paid cadet program designed to address the current statewide shortage of EMTs. By actively engaging with the community and recruiting new members, Boston EMS aims to boost enrollment in EMT training, paving the way for employment in emergency medical services. New EMT hires start at approximately $30/hour, with annual step increases, percentage wage boosts, and opportunities for additional income through overtime.

Please note: The Boston EMS EMT training program runs twice a year, starting in January and August, and lasts for 6 months.
